THE STELTMAN CHAIR

As part of my 2nd year of University, we explored intervention, installation and insertion which takes place within architecture and design by utilising them in the Steltman Chair created by Gerrit Rietveld.

PROTOTYPE & INTERVENTION

Prototyping the chair and the different intervention possibilities at a 1:25 scale.

ADAPT & ReUSE

After experimenting with different interventions of the existing chair design, as a group we divided roles and discussed our proposed intervention for a new design.

My role as the maker, was to build and upholster the chair and 1:1 scale with the new design.

As the original Steltman Chair was used in a jewellery store for couples to choose their wedding rings together, as a group, we decided we would go down the route of a wedding tradition; 'Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue'.

Something old: the wood itself is generation old. Something new: the design intervention itself. something borrowed: we used the original design. And finally, something Blue: we used blue upholstery on the left hand side of the chair (inspired by the vein which runs from the left arm to the heart - the true meaning of wearing the wedding ring on the left hand).
